Peace on earth is not just about putting an end to war. It is also about being at peace with ourselves and with others. For there to be peace on earth it must begin in each person’s heart. Peace is a predecessor to joy. Each person longs for this peace because inner peace is rest for the soul. And yet this peace seems so allusive because our lives are not peaceful……our souls not at rest. Life has become so hectic. Instead of Christmas being a celebration of the birth of Christ and hope coming to the world it has become increasing more about earthly pleasures and desires. The most blessed and joyful time of the year has become for many a dreaded and stressful time of year. Even our prayers that should bring us peace are often interrupted by our own thoughts of worry and anxiety.
What keeps us from the peace we seek? It is the unforgiveness and the anger not dwelt with in our hearts. It is not living according to God’s Will and it is not taking the time to be grateful. We should never neglect an opportunity to be grateful. People are constantly looking for a miracle to happen and what they miss is that we are surrounded by miracles every day. Look down at your hands and you will see that your own body is a miracle. The air you breathe, the clouds in the sky, the wind, the rain, the trees……these are all miracles.
Does it not give you peace when you contemplate God’s goodness and blessings? To become more peaceful we must change the way we view ourselves, others, and the world.
God is calling us all to become peacemakers. “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called sons of God.” Matthew 5:9. Becoming a peacemaker is simple. It all begins with love. When we love more freely it is hard to be angry and it is easy to forgive. So let us give the gift of love and forgiveness not only this Christmas but for the rest of our lives.
“Every act of love is a work of peace no matter how small.” Mother Teresa
